Catching Lots of Rays During these Dog Days!

This summer has been, well... a bit lonesome and boring, but also filled with fun.  We have been pretty much stuck at home all summer because Cary's new job is rigorous during the hot summer months and it is still too hard to do much with David.  But... thanks to Pinterest, the baby pool, water hose and Margo's incredible imagination, we have made tons of wonderful memories together.

Fortunately, Margo got to attend a seven week summer school program at her new school which was WONDERFUL!!  They took a limo ride, had two water days with pools, slides and sprinklers, a rodeo day with a petting zoo and an awesome carnival with face painting, balloon animals and more!  Despite her usual separation anxiety, I think she really enjoyed it!

Otherwise, we did a lot of creative play at home.  I scoured Pinterest for super easy and cheap projects.  We painted the concrete with water, made fruit loop necklaces, made a card board rocket ship, made paper plate paddles with balloons and a home made bird feeder, among many things.  My little artist did tons of paint with water, chalk drawings on the sidewalk, filled up her coloring books and went crazy with stickers which were a big favorite these past few months.  We also made animals with this awesome Alex craft kit.  I will be buying MANY more of these.  So inexpensive and fun!

Margo has such a wonderful imagination.  I love to observe her at play and we have been working really hard at getting her to happily play on her own, a requirement now that I am cleaning my own house, cooking many more meals at home and taking care of David.  She has created so many amazing and fun scenarios with her dolls and stuffed animals... the typical tea party and picnic, creating an ocean scene with a beach towel and all of her ocean animals, making the coffee table into a choo choo train and most recently taking all of her animals to the baseball game or teaching them at school.  She is very nurturing and loves to take care of all her animals and babies, kissing and loving on them in the sweetest, gentlest way.

We had lots of wonderful visitors this summer.  First, my sister and niece, Caroline, came.  It was such a special treat and to say Margo loved having Caroline here is an understatement!  They played together really well and had a blast at the trampoline park.  I treasured my time with my sister and also had our extended family over for Memorial Day weekend, which was so wonderful catching up.  My mom has come twice and Margo and David loved every second with her.  We just hung at the house and enjoyed one another's company.  A real special treat was seeing my sweet cousin, Ali, and her beautiful brood for a quick visit.  I rarely get to see her, but adore our special relationship, so it did my soul some good to spend some time with one of the most gracious people I know! Both of my sisters and their beautiful families spent a day with us in July.  We took David out to dinner and drank wine on our wonderful back patio.

The Weavers, my in-laws, also came for 4th of July and we had a truly wonderful time.  We BBQ'd ribs, pork and had an array of other yummy dishes, drank too many margaritas on the patio, laughed with the kiddos and attempted to watch the fireworks on the golf course.  It was a grand idea, but a bit of a failure.  We live on a hill and I was hoping to see something closer and more spectacular, but it was mainly from a distance.  Nonetheless, Margo loved staying up late and going for our little adventure in the dark with flashlights!

Classic!
Speaking of fireworks, we took Margo to the minor league baseball game in Round Rock and specifically scheduled it for a Friday night, so we could make up for the failed fireworks on the 4th.  We went with her cousin, Lucas, and their parents, my niece and nephew, Trey and Kayla.  One of my favorite things about living here has been forging a relationship with them.  They just bought a house six miles away and I cannot wait!  Margo and Lucas are only a month apart in age and have already had numerous fun play dates.  With them right down the road, I imagine they will be forming a special cousin bond.  My sister's kids are much older than ours, so I am so happy to have a cousin close in age to Margo and David.  Both her and Lucas had fun sharing popcorn, shaking their booties to the baseball game tunes and both loved the spectacular fireworks show!
Loving our fun at the baseball game!

Fireworks are awesome!
Margo had a week long visit with her GiGi and PaPa, and although we missed her terribly, I got so many things accomplished!  My time with David was most special and I enjoyed bonding with him in the peace and quiet with my undivided attention.  Margo did fantastic with them because they are wonderful grandparents and boy do they spoil her rotten.  She loved going out to eat, to the mall and to the park.  She played GiGi's piano, had lots of treats and got the undivided attention she has been craving recently.

That is our only set-back this summer.  Margo did not start developing jealousy issues until David was almost six months old, but goodness, she has been challenging since.  While she is still as sweet as can be, she literally has begged and pleaded for me to hold her and put down David.  She has thrown her first, big on the floor fits ever, has had heightened separation anxiety and has just been a little pill.  She screams at the top of her lungs when she doesn't get her way, whines incessantly at times and is very needy.  I feel sad that our little girl is growing up, exhibiting her independence and also suffering a little bit, longing to be a baby again yet is stuck somewhere in between big girl and baby.  I have a heart that is quite big enough for both her and David, but I do not have four hands or two brains to handle it all at once as much as I wish I often could.  I love my life with two babies and I know that once Margo starts reaping the real rewards of having a sibling, she will see just how special her brother is.  I think deep down inside she already knows, but cannot wrap her head around the true loss of her mommy as she knew her.  She is mourning in a way, as I have as well at times, and my heart aches for her.
She LOVED pushing her brother!

Chillin' on a rainy day!
On an exciting note, Margo is potty trained--yahoo!  I am oh' so proud of her!  That is for another post, but she took her own initiative and is doing great!  I have updated you on David's progress in other posts, our sweet boy, who I just adore!  This post is long, but I wanted to update our family this summer.  I could go on and on, there is just too much to capture it all.  Cary and I celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary, have been on some much needed dates and have thoroughly enjoyed our breezy back patio and the wonderful walking trails of the neighborhood.  Life is good, we are good, summer was fun and we are ready for all that awaits us in the fall!

Pinterest Fare I Have to Share

As I mentioned in my quinoa post, I have really loved trying new recipes from Pinterest this summer.  I have always loved to cook and being a SAHM makes it so much easier.  My favorite recipes this summer have included beautiful organic grape tomatoes and using fresh corn in everything.  If a recipe called for canned or frozen corn, I used fresh.  It is so easy to roast corn right in the husk.  Just bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 25 minutes, perfect corn every time!

Here are some faves!

We ate these salads as meals with bread and a side of fresh summer berries:

Summertime Noodles w/ Sweet Balsamic Dressing

My Niece said this was her favorite new recipe of the summer!

Yummy entrees:

Spaghetti with Tomatoes, Black Olives, Garlic, and Feta Cheese
I used halved grape tomatoes in this.  The briney flavor was amazing!

Black Bean Spinach Enchiladas

Thanks to my niece, Kayla, this was my favorite recipe of the summer!

Spicy Turkey Sausage with Black Eyed Peas and Spinach
Spicy Turkey Sausage With Black-Eyed Peas and Spinach Recipe
There is nothing summery about this, but this was the easiest and one of the tastiest recipes I have made in a while.  I served it over brown rice.

Sides and Stuff:

Asparagus Delight

I used EVOO for the oil.

Barefoot Contessa Corn Salad

I added my favorite grape tomatoes to this.  Simply wonderful!

Poolside Dip

Blackberry Pie Bars

I used six cups of fresh blackberries and all I can say is pure heaven in my mouth!

You could truly not go wrong with any of these recipes.  Most of them were pretty simple and spot on flavor wise.  Happy cooking!

David Came Alive in Month Five

David's fifth month has been a true and utter joy and his little personality really came alive!  I can no longer label him as just fussy and sensitive and of course sweet.  In his fifth month, I have discovered that he is intense, active, happy, vocal and so much fun!
Isn't he beautiful?

This is what Margo would say!
This month, David started sleeping 11 hours through the night--hallelujah for mommy!  I don't care what they say, but solids make all the difference in the world, especially for a reflux baby.  I am making baby food again and have already successfully started David on apples, peas, sweet potatoes, peaches, pears and butternut squash.  He really seems to enjoy it all and want more.  I am still trying to keep things gradual and not feed him too much since his tummy has been such a big challenge.
Loving his food!
Six Month Stats:
Weight: 16 lbs. 6 oz. in the 25%
Height:  26" in the 40%
He is a bit on the small side, but we also have to remember he is a month early and will catch up eventually.  We are also having his right eye checked by a specialist since it seems to be turning in in every picture.

We have had a few sleep set backs which stem from David's increasing awareness and love for rolling over.  He wants to see mommy in the night, so rolls over to play with the hope I will come back in and roll him back.  He usually gets to a screaming point before I come back in.  I have seen him roll both ways, so I know he can do it and this little game he has created with me has become increasingly annoying, yet a bit funny.
We're gonna have our hands full! ;-)
Happy 4th of July!

He also got a terrible diaper rash that began to spread all over his body.  I could not figure out the culprit, so our little guy was miserable at night until we solved the problem.  Turns out, David had a reaction to the Honest Co. baby wipes.  We did a test spot and figured it out after lots of process of elimination.  Funny that a company that claims to be all green and chemical free can effect your little one's skin so much.  David is clearly going to have sensitive skin like his mama and must have reacted to one of the herbal ingredients in the wipes, my guess is pomegranate.  It took two doctors appointments and two prescriptions to get it cleared up.  That hurdle behind us, and he is sleeping through the night again.

David started laughing a lot this month, especially at his big sister.  He absolutely loves to watch Margo in action and thinks just about everything she does is funny.  He also loves to be tossed around and tickled, two sure fire ways to elicit precious baby giggles.  He loves to be outside and all of his toys.  This month he was introduced to the exersaucer and the jumperoo, both big hits.  Thanks heaven for amazing baby toys to keep them entertained.  It didn't take him long to learn to jump and he loved putting on a performance for us.  You could tell he was proud of himself and loved to show off his new jumping skills.

David also has a very calm and quiet side.  He will happily play in his bed for several minutes after waking from a nap.  He is content to sit on the side lines with a toy in his mouth and observe.  You can tell he is just taking it all in.  He loves to watch and that includes watching TV.  I cannot believe I am allowing it.  Margo did not watch TV until she was two, but it is inevitable now with a big sister.  He loves it!  He doesn't seem to be as into books as Margo was, but I am still trying and hoping he will develop a liking for them.
Playing with his feet
Intense is another word I would use for David.  My goodness, our boy can scream.  I have had both grandparents comment that they have never heard a baby cry so hard and Cary's parents even wanted us to take him to the doctor.  I have figured out that it is just him.  He is sensitive and if he gets tired, hungry or frustrated, my goodness, he will let you know with an intensity that is ear piercing!  He clearly has a bit of a temper too.  If you take away a toy to put on his clothes or move him, whoa... you better watch out!  He is just very expressive... in good ways too.  He lets you know when he is happy as well.  If he is enjoying playing or discovering his new toys, he hoots and howls to let us know.  When daddy walks in from work, he roars with excitement to be held by his favorite guy!

Likes his tummy more than his back
David is a bit of a paradox.  One side of him seems so calm, utterly sweet and beautifully sensitive.  The other side is intense and alarmingly sensitive.  I think he is going to bring more joy and love to this household than our hearts can hold, yet continue to challenge us to grow as people and parents.  I have already had to learn a whole new level of tolerance, patience and calmness.  What a blessing this beautiful boy of ours is.  My heart feels so full and our family is truly complete with his special spirit in the mix!
